Dan Dorfman is an Associate Attorney with The Blake Horwitz Law Firm, Ltd. An experienced litigator and effective advocate, Dan has served as a trial attorney on police misconduct cases involving false arrest, excessive force, unreasonable searches, malicious prosecution and First Amendment violations. Dan has also represented criminal defendants in Cook County courts.
Dan is admitted to practice law in California and Illinois and has represented plaintiffs and defendants in federal and state courts throughout the country. Dan has litigated civil cases involving antitrust claims, trademark disputes, false advertising, insurance coverage, employment discrimination, disability rights, and personal injury.
Dan currently represents a truck driver who sustained permanent knee and cervical spine injuries in a collision involving two other semis on a highway in Indiana. He also represents an Illinois company seeking indemnification from its commercial insurance carrier for a matter that was litigated in California.
Personal injury matters Dan has handled include the case of a young girl who was attacked on a school playground, a teenager whose hand was severely injured by a defective table saw and a large-animal veterinarian who was permanently disabled by equipment that he used in his work. In other representative matters, a national franchisor of employment agencies that Dan represented won a substantial judgment in mediation on its claims against a franchisee for breach of a non-competition agreement and misappropriation of trade secrets. Dan’s client, a global food manufacturing company, settled a long-running trademark dispute over one of its most famous marks on favorable terms that restricted use of the rival’s mark. Dan also defended this company against false advertising and unfair competition claims arising from promotions the company sponsored. On behalf of people with mobility disabilities, Dan helped prosecute federal and state claims against department store chains whose narrow aisles and over-stuffed racks denied his clients physical access to the stores’ merchandise areas.
Dan is a graduate of the University of San Francisco School of Law and studied political science at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. Dan also trained as a rabbi and directed Jewish campus organizations at several urban campuses of the California State University system before moving to Chicago.
